2018 CONFERENCE

The Future of Health Conference has continued to be the leading platform that sets actionable roadmaps to move the Nigeria Health sector forward. The welfare of the Nigerian patient was the highlight of the 2018 Future of Health Conference which had the theme ‘The Diaspora as Nigeria’s Brain Gain’. The objective of the Conference was to showcase the opportunities in Nigeria’s health ecosystem to health professionals in Nigeria and the Diaspora and seek ways to leverage their specialist training to build networks that will strengthen the Nigerian health sector. Dr. Ukwuori-Gisela Kalu
Consultant Clinical Psychologist in Private Practice
Dr. Ukwuori-Gisela Kalu is a Clinical Psychologist who is passionate about Global Mental Health promotion and intervention. With a strong interest in clinical work and research, she is exceptional at using her expertise to treat patients with grief, anxiety, bipolar disorders, addictions and several other psychological conditions. Dr. Kalu has worked in several countries within Europe and Africa. Currently, she works as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. She is passionate about human rights, disaster and humanitarian relief work, and poverty alleviation. She obtained her first degree in Psychology from the University of the West of England and holds a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinPsy).
Temitayo (Tayo) Erogbogbo
Director of Advocacy at MSD for Mothers
Mr Temitayo (Tayo) Erogbogbo has two decades of combined private sector and international development experience, 12 years of which was spent in the pharmaceutical industry in multiple roles that included community relations, government affairs, marketing, and sales. As the Director of Advocacy at MSD for Mothers, Tayo is responsible for developing and strategically directing MSD for Mothers’ program engagement in advocacy initiatives. He is focused on sexual, reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health (SRMNCAH), and most recently, he led the establishment of an adolescents and youth constituency at The Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH) to advocate for better SRMNCAH policies and services at global, regional, and national levels. Additionally, he contributed to the development of the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s, and Adolescents’ Health 2016 -2030. Prior to MSD for Mothers, Tayo spearheaded Abbott’s HIV patient relations function in Europe, developing services to support people living with HIV by partnering with community organizations.
Dr. Chumy Nwogu
Chief Executive Officer Lakeshore Cancer Center, Lagos
Dr. Chumy Nwogu is the Chief Executive Officer Lakeshore Cancer Center, Lagos. For over a decade Dr. Nwogu has worked energetically in cancer care in the diaspora and is currently professor of Surgery and Oncology at the Roswell Park Cancer Institute and at SUNY, Buffalo. His passion for providing cancer care solutions in resource limited settings led him to get involved in numerous cancer screening missions, awareness campaigns and professional education programmes all over Nigeria. He recently pioneered Nigeria’s first cancer centre, the Lakeshore Cancer Centre in Lagos.
Dr. Femi Sunmonu
Co-Founder/Director of PurpleSource HealthCare
Dr. Femi Sunmonu is the Co-Founder/Director of PurpleSource HealthCare. An enthusiast for primary health care, Dr. Sunmonu led the design and implementation of sustainable community-based health insurance schemes in southern Nigeria with inputs spanning healthcare financing to health-systems strengthening. With over a decade of clinical and commercial experience in the diasporan healthcare space, he brings with him a strong network of international collaborative partnerships. He has a B.A in Biology and Fine Arts from Rutgers University, a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) from the American InterContinental University (AIU).
Dr. Olujimi Coker
Chief Medical Director, Lagoon Hospitals Lagos, Nigeria
Dr. Olujimi Coker is the Chief Medical Director, Lagoon Hospitals Lagos, Nigeria. An avid advocate for seeking locally available treatment before venturing overseas, Dr. Coker is highly skilled in diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy. Through his innovative leadership, Lagoon Hospitals has introduced and implemented “Surgery for the future”. A graduate of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, and a member of the Royal Society of Medicine, amongst other professional bodies, his interests include advanced laparoscopic surgery for gallstones, hernias, appendicitis and colorectal cancer.
Dr. Olumide Okunola
HealthCare Program Manager- International Finance Corporation
Dr. Olumide Okunola is the HealthCare Program Manager- International Finance Corporation. He is excellent at putting his multidisciplinary training in public health, health economics and financing, programme management and business administration into generating relevant solutions, decisions and policies for governments and agencies. He earned his Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) and a Master’s in Major Program Management from Saïd Business School, University of Oxford. He also holds an MSc in Health Economics and Financing from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and an MSc in Public Health, from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM).
Dr. Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu
Founder, Medicaid Cancer Foundation
Dr. Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu is a Paediatrician and Founder of Medicaid Cancer Foundation. With a keen passion for humanity, Dr. Shinkafi-Bagudu’s interests cuts across health, education and skills acquisition for women, children and the youth in Kebbi state and Northern Nigeria. Her heart for children led her to set up the Paediatric Unit of the Garki Hospital in 2002, and six years later she established the Medicaid Radio-Diagnostics Centre to help improve the standard of diagnostic services in Nigeria. Recognizing the need for more advocacy for the common cancers in Nigeria, she founded the Medicaid Cancer Foundation (MCF), which holds the annual One Million Walk Away Cancer Fundraiser. She has a Masters in Paediatrics, a Diploma in Tropical Child Health and is a member of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health. Dr. Bagudu is the First Lady of Kebbi State.
Mr. Douglas Emeka Okor
Consultant Neurosurgeon at Zitadel Medicals and Diagnostics, Abuja
Douglas Emeka Okor is a Consultant Neurosurgeon at Zitadel Medicals and Diagnostics in Nigeria. His subspecialist competences are Skull Base/Endoscopic Pituitary, Neurovascular and Complex Spinal Surgeries. Douglas is a foremost Nigerian Health Sector Advocate, Entrepreneur, Motivational Speaker and Youth Empowerment Mentor. His secondary education and primary medical degree were in Benin City: Adolo College and University of Benin, respectively. His Specialist Medical training was in the United Kingdom following which he returned to Nigeria. Mr Okor is Co-founder and Chair of the Ashanti Graham Health and Education Initiative Foundation (AGHEIF) – a charity with the vision “21st Century Health Care for Nigeria.” The charity has made significant progress in enabling capacity development in Nigeria through healthcare trainings for medical professionals and providing important equipment and hardware for medical institutions. With his mantra #TheNigerianPatientsAreWorthIt, it is undisputed that he is proudly Nigerian and determined to promote team collaboration of healthcare providers to help turn around the Nigerian healthcare space.
Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh
Consultant Paediatrician, Paediatric Partners
Dr. Atinuke Uwajeh is a Consultant Paediatrician and a strong advocate for preventive health care. She is co-founder of the Pediatric Partners Hospital in Nigeria, which was established in 2011 with her partner, Dr. Ekuase Sanusi. Her last position prior to returning to Nigeria was as an Attending Physician with Advocate Medical Group, one of the largest physician groups in the Illinois/Indiana area. She completed her medical training at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital in Ile-Ife, Osun state, Nigeria, and did her residency training at the Howard University Hospital in Washington, D.C. USA. She went on to complete a year of fellowship training in Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the prestigious University of Chicago Children’s Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Uwajeh is registered with Nigerian Medical and Dental Council, a member of the Nigerian Medical Association and Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Dr. Adeyemi Johnson
Interventional Cardiovascular Specialist, First Cardiology Consultants
Dr. Adeyemi Johnson is a cardiology specialist in Charlotte, North Carolina. He is the Founder and Medical Director of First Cardiology Consultants in Lagos, Nigeria. With over three decades of practice, he is one of the foremost Interventional Cardiovascular Specialists in Nigeria and the United States. He received his medical degree from University of Lagos College of Medicine, and a degree in Internal Medicine and Cardiology from Columbia University in New York. He holds a certificate in healthcare leadership from Cornell University – College of Human Ecology.
Professor Rotimi Jaiyesimi
Secretary, Medical Association of Nigerians Across Great Britain (MANSAG)
Professor Rotimi Jaiyesimi is the Associate Medical Director for Patient Safety & Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at the Basildon University Hospital, Basildon, UK. He is passionate about seeing the reversal of Nigeria’s brain drain and has been at the forefront of the “brain gain” philosophy, going on medical missions to Ibadan, Sagamu, Abuja, and Abeokuta to share knowledge and transfer skills. He was also Chairman of the Planning committee of the Presidential Initiative on Diasporan Engagement (PRIDE) program, designed to enlist Nigerian healthcare professionals in the diaspora to return to Nigeria for varying periods to help strengthen the health system, and is currently a member of the Diaspora Professionals Healthcare Initiative. He graduated from the University of Ibadan Medical School and holds a Master’s degree in Business Administration and a Master’s degree in Medical Law. He was formerly Visiting Professor, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Sunderland, England, and is a Visiting Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Ibadan.
Dr. Fatima Kyari
Consultant Ophthalmologist and Founder, Centre for Community and Rural Eye Care (ICare)
Dr. Fatima Kyari is a Consultant Ophthalmologist and currently the coordinator for the establishment of the College of Health Sciences at Baze University, Abuja. Her passion for health care delivery at the grassroots led her to establish the Centre for Community and Rural Eye Care (ICare), an NGO that provides cataract surgical services to rural underserved areas. She has a keen interest in health systems strengthening, healthcare financing and human capital development with a focus on health solutions and translation of research into practice and policy agendas. She has authored many peer-reviewed publications including the Commonwealth’s policy brief on ‘A Sustainable Approach to Control Avoidable Blindness and Vision Loss’ in the context of Universal Health Coverage and the Sustainable Development Goals. Fatima is a member of the editorial committees of the World Health Organization’s ‘World Report on Vision’ and of the Community Eye Health Journal of the International Centre for Eye Health (ICEH). She chairs the Scientific Committee of the Ophthalmological Society of Nigeria (OSN). Dr. Kyari trained as a medical doctor at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, and obtained her MSc and PhD (Public Health, Eye Care) at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). She is the West Africa sub-regional Chair of the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), and a fellow of the West African College of Surgeons.
Dr. Inya Ode
Veterinary Surgeon and On Air Personality
Dr. Inya Ode is a trained Veterinary Surgeon from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. After a rewarding three years of Veterinary Medicine practice. She moved on to pursue her passion in radio media. Over the last six years Dr. Ode has carved a niche as one of the celebrity on-air personalities in radio broadcasting in Nigeria. She comperes events and currently co-hosts the popular radio show ‘’The Midday Dialogue’’ on 95.1 Nigeria Info Abuja. Inya is married with three kids. She will co-compere the Conference with Dr. Ike Anya.

Dr. Ike Anya is co-founder of EpiAFRIC & Nigeria Health Watch. An experienced public health physician, he has worked in the UK and Nigeria. With expertise in communicable disease management, health improvement, HIV/AIDS, capacity building; health service quality; teaching and training; and design, implementation and monitoring of public health strategy and programmes, he is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health UK, an honorary lecturer at Imperial College & teaches at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
